Snow Days, Steroids, and Sprints

A random bit of blogging on this fine, fine Sunday evening. Here ya go:

1. Snow Days: Well, when your Little is 100% himself, being stuck inside with him for days isn't so bad. In fact, it's wonderful. He's his cooperative, happy, talkative, precious self. There are regularly scheduled naps so the adults can have a moment and the Little will eat well and be happy. Then there are snow days where your Little has a bad reaction to a steroid and walks around the house like a zombie for 3 hours crying, screaming, and being extremely disagreeable. Want milk? No. Put milk away. WANT YOUR MILK!!! Get milk back out . . . "Put milk away" Put milk back ...  screaming match for more milk. And so the game continued until Chris came home and suggested I call the doctor. Brilliant! Why hadn't I thought of that! Maybe because I was trying everything to comfort our child. I call the doc, she hears him screaming in the background and immediately makes a note in his chart that he can't tolerate the meds. Then mama treks out in the ice and snow to Your Pharmacy for an inhaled version of a steroid which will be less invasive on his little body. I come home to a calm, quiet, happy baby. That lasts about 5 minutes. Then we transition from whiny zombie baby to wired, hyper, silly baby. All over the place, not even talking normally, and wants a bath at 4:00. So to the tub we go. Is it bed time yet? :)

2. Steroids: Try putting your child on one for a day and see how well you function. It'll break you, I promise. Thankfully this inhaled version is working much better and Webb is pretty much back to his old self.

3. Sprints: Never, ever, has sprinting felt so good as it did the morning after the steroid shenanigans. I met my personal trainer :) at the Y and we did quarter mile sprints and I racked up about 6 miles on the treadmill. I was then prepared to head back home to be a sane mother. I'm so thankful for my trainer and friend. That one day you invited me to run has turned into something I don't think I'll ever stop doing. Here's to more sprints, miles of running fun, and watching our Littles play together.

So all in all, it was a crazy weekend. But you know, that's what makes life interesting. It's what strengthens your marriage for the 1,000th time, holds friendships together, and makes you appreciate things so much more. I am thankful for those who surround me, help me, and encourage me. Steroids and all.

This wasn't staged. Really. We were messing in the mirror and Webb starts making goldfish faces. My phone was right there so I took advantage.

Transitions

Thankfully Webb has done well with most transitions in his little life thus far. We've been talking about and planning a move to a big boy bed for him since he's mastered climbing out a few months ago. I guess it's pretty good that he waited as long as he did to start . . . but now there's no looking back! Some friends of ours let us borrow a toddler bed to try out so we set it up in our bedroom for a few days and let Webb play and lay on it for fun. We talked and talked about that being his new bed and how he couldn't jump on it or get out of it during nap or bedtime. Yesterday, we made the switch and he slept well at naptime and last night! I did go up to check on him last night and his little head was hanging off the side. I think we'll move it against the wall and see if that helps.

I am very proud of him. It's a big deal for him- and for us! A sign our first born is growing up! No worries though, the crib isn't going far. :) (Don't even ask cause the answer is no!)

Hope you all stay warm. We're snuggled up today resting and relaxing after taking Webb to school for an hour (I've learned that wide open halls are crazy-baby territory) and a little doctor's visit for a head cold. I'm thinking a trip to the drugstore will be in order later to treat my big boy for doing so well in his new bed.

Sunday Social

So after browsing blogs tonight, I thought I'd do this little survey to pass the time. You see, I took a two hour nap today while Chris "played" outside so I'm not really tired. He's already in bed . . . . There's laundry to fold but who really wants to do that right now? So here goes:

1. Top 3 favorite foods.
Mexican
Collard Greens
Mimi's Squash Casserole

2. First 3 things you do in the morning.
Hit snooze 5 times, potty, coffee.
3. Last 3 things you do at night.
Make sure Webb is covered and snuggled, set alarm clock, take off earbobs.

4. 3 TV shows you never miss. (Since we seriously don't watch tv, I'll answer this for Webb.)
Bob the Builder
Sesame Street
Caillou
5. 3 places you want to visit.
Glacier National Park
Switzerland
Tahiti

6. 3 people you can always count on.
Chris
Nancy
Carrie

Happy Sunday, y'all! :)

Life Lately

I told Webb the other day that I just want to bottle him up and keep him this age forever. He is such a big boy- doing things by himself, telling us when he's ready for a bath and bedtime, and helping some with picking up toys and clearing the dinner table. He is such a talker. The other day on our bike ride, he talked the whole time. He talked about the birds, the trees, the bushes, the sky, "pedalwin" his new bike, the squirrel we saw who was "broken" because he was missing his tail. Listening to him talk to his trucks and trains. Hearing "Whoah, look at that!" or "This trucks picking up a rocks." Or hearing him say the blessing: "Dear Lord, thank you for us meal, thank you for us meal, help us, lead us, direct us, way to have us go AMEN!" Ahhh! I could simply eat him up!

Tonight, we're snuggled up, listening to it sleet and thunder. Last weekend it was 72!

Here's to lots of snow in the morning!

Happy New Year!

So, out with the old, in with the new, huh? Well, the shelves at Walmart this afternoon weren't much help. As soon as I turned around from grabbing a box of Goldfish for Lu (Webb), I was greeted with row upon row of Valentine's candy. Then came the Super Bowl food- the chips, dips, junk, etc. I thought to myself, "Jeez! We just got over the cookies, cakes, drinks, junk, etc. of Christmas and now society is telling me to keep eating cause there are more reasons to over the next few months and weeks! Ok, enough with that rant. I'm really trying to make some conscious decisions this year to do some things better, more whole-heartedly than last year. Eating being one of them. Looking back at 2012, I lost 25-30 pounds on Weight Watchers. I didn't exercise a bit; the weight just fell off. After seeing so many fit people around me, I decided it was time for me to quit making excuses and start exercising. Over the break, I've logged close to 10 miles of running, some cross training, and some spinning. My plan is to continue running and cross training interchangably. This will come in the form of late night trips to the Y or going straight from work. The reward is so worth it. I'm pumped!

2012 also brought a new house. A house built in the 1930's that came with some renovations and elbow grease. It's still a work in progress but hopefully this year, we'll have it all done. I'm still picking out fabrics for the living and dining rooms, the closet in our bedroom is in progress, and I'm guessing next might be the mud room, laundry room, or maybe a bathroom. We'll see what the contractor thinks. :)

I started my job teaching first grade again in August after a three year break. Best decision yet. I love my co-workers, my boss, my students, and even Common Core! Life is just better all around when you love your job.

2012 was the Year of the Toddler. My first experience with parenting a rambuctious, fun-loving, loud, toddler. Gosh, I could eat him up. He's a ripe two year old now- making some of his own decisions about what he eats, drinks, or does with this time. Sometimes those choices lead to meltdowns, but we're trying to give him some independence. Tonight we were building a sandcastle with blocks and Webb said we made a "great team." Or before bed, after reading Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site, he said "Excavator's going to sweep" I thought my heart would melt. A good-talking, comprehending two year old. With a sweet southern drawl. I told Chris he was going to be a lady killa. :) 2013 will be another toddler year and I can't wait!

Happy 2013 Everyone!
